You have a book to promote. Everyone says social media is essential, yet there is a right way to do it. It pays to ask yourself five questions before you hit the enter key or click on that ‘tweet’ button.

1. Am I bragging?

This is the greatest mistake you can make in social media. No one likes a braggart. A simple announcement that you have a book signing coming up is fine. Pushing out statistics on how many books you’ve sold, or announcing your page rank in Google search isn’t.

People want to know what your book can do for them. They’re interested in solving their problems. Keep your content centered on your audience.

2. Should this remain private?

Privacy is something to protect. It may be the norm on Facebook to send out pictures and quips about who you’re with and what you’re doing. Just be sure you have the permission of those you are with to share their private lives with others. Just because someone came to your book signing doesn’t mean they want their picture published to your Facebook timeline.
