The number of print-on-demand (POD) publishers has exploded since Michael Kleper’s The Handbook of Digital Publishing which was first published by the Rochester Institute of Technology Prentice Hall in 2000. By 2006, the market was ripe for POD to explode.

Amazon.com saw opportunity in two small companies–CustomFlix (independent film distributor) and BookSurge (independent self-publishing, on-demand printing and online distribution services). We know those two companies as CreateSpace today.

There are other POD publishers competing against CreateSpace. Lulu, Lightening Source and Bookbaby are just three I’ve communicated with. A Google search reveals many more.
