Being a successful author requires you to continually nurture 1) discipline, 2) organization, 3) dedication to quality, 4) attention to detail, 5) realistic self-esteem and 6) patience.

1) Discipline

There are days you don’t feel like working. You do it anyway because it’s the only way to become a successful author. If you allow your feelings to control you, you won’t be successful at any stage.

It takes discipline to complete your manuscript.  It requires discipline to put your book out there for beta readers and to listen to their comments without taking personal offense when the feedback isn’t 100% positive.

Once you’ve written your book, you need to work on something  at least six days a week that promotes your book. Write a blog post. Plan a book signing. Create promotional materials. Organize  webinars.

You may also need to start exploring ideas for your next book. Even if you can only put in an hour a day, you’ll eventually have a completed manuscript.

2) Organization

When organization slides, so does productivity. When productivity slides, it’s difficult to make a reasonable return on your investment.

Organization begins with using productivity tools. For example, the calendar in your smart phone or in Microsoft’s Office Suite can help you schedule and keep track of appointments. Other productivity tools include: This content is for members only.

Summary

Of all of these traits, the most important is discipline. Discipline to make cold calls if necessary. Discipline to spend the hours at your desk. Discipline to hold your tongue. Discipline to attend webinars. If you are lacking this one trait, the remaining qualities may not benefit you at all.

Fortunately, this trait is one all of us can choose to exercise. And just like our muscles, it’s quick to respond to use.
