It’s strange how unrelated activities sometimes converge into one place. I am working with a friend on a booklet he plans to distribute at the the upcoming National Association of Environmental Professionals. He is the author of the text and wants to include photographs to emphasize key ideas throughout the booklet. Thus the issue of copyright, images and how they can be used is a topic I must consider as I design and edit this work.

My friend sent me a number of photographs for inclusion in the booklet. Most of them, I am confident he or his son have taken. They’re avid photographers. However, I instantly recognized one as a painting by Nathan Green. Can we use this photograph?

Not without permission.

The event is just weeks away and we have to get the booklet to the printer next week. There is no time to get Green’s permission to use the artwork, and to use the picture would violate Green’s rights as the artist and owner of the distribution rights for his art. I told my friend we need to find an alternative.

This discussion happened just yesterday, and I was wishing I had some way to make this whole copyright issue easy for my friend to understand. What a surprise this morning when I found in my email’s inbox a newsletter leading me to this wonderful infographic .

I am sharing it with their permission.
